Note that Intel is also looking to be a fab for other companies. So if their road map pans out and they are an industry leader, Apple can still look to Intel for fabrication while they still design their processors in house.

Switching to their own processors isn’t about raw performance for Apple but rather about a predictable product map. Each generation of their processors doesn’t have to be inherently innovative they just need it to not inhibit their overall designs.
